The British Asparagus Season 2008

by WannabeTVChef @ 2008-05-12 - 16:59:13

BA001

Just incase you didn’t know the British Asparagus season started several weeks a go (officially on StGeorge's Day) on April 23rd.

Living in the county of Worcestershire I am very lucky to be surrounded with Asparagus Farms, that sell bunches at their farm shops.

I've been lucky enough to eat freshly picked Asparagus in Europe, in the USA but for me the clear winner by a country mile is the British...I'm not sure why but I don't know any celebrity chef that disagrees with me on that one.
In fact the pick of the very best in the UK for my money is a farm called Red House Farm in the town of Harvington.

If you live anywhere near Harvington then you must come and buy some.

The thing that always blows my mind during the short Asparagus season is you can go into the big chain supermarkets and still see Asparagus from other parts of the world, that was probably picked 10 days ago being bought by shoppers that have no idea that just 2 miles down the road the local Asparagus was picked this morning.

Do you have any Asparagus farms close to you?

Give me an old world and a new world wine suggestion to go with the Asparagus.

Regards

Hi

We have a PYO Fruit business on a small scale and only do PYO and ready picked for customers and orders, No supermarkets! This has been very successful.

We also started growing asparagus with 1/4 acre 8 years ago and 4 years ago put in another 1/4 acre. It has become so popular this last few years and I have regular customers who love this fine vegetable. I pride myself on its success as I get up every morning at 5.30am and pick the asparagus fresh for the public and my loyaled customers, even in the rain! I have over the years seem to have become quite a connoisseur on what can I say the finest vegetable in the world. Picked fresh daily and cooked the same day is something else! You can smell the sweetness picking it and the taste raw straight out of the ground again is wonderful.

We are fortunate to live in a house (small farm), a field off a main A road the A46 in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire (the eptic centre of the recent earthquake). Which brings my signs to my customers attention.

I'm told quite frequently by my customers that my asparagus is the best they have ever tasted. I have customers visiting the area who take it back to London and one gentlemen in his late 20's visits his mother in Grimsby travelling from Northampton and will not buy from his local supplier as he says mines taste so good.

We are now going to plant another 1/4 acre as I sell out each day and have to dispoint alot of customers.

As for wine no idea, my customers and I are always exchanging recipes. LINCOLNSHIRE I feel has the best Asparagus in England.

Would love to hear your comments.

Dear Rosemarie,

As I said in my article in my experience the best Asparagus is grown in Worcestershire. However in the pursuit of fairness I would more than happy to arrange a blind taste test between your Asparagus and the Asparagus from Red House Farm. You would be more than welcome to be present and be part of the taste test. I'd also be interested in finding out if your Asparagus season is approximately the same time and length as the one here?

Travelling around there are strong views on asparagus. In Paris you will mainly find white asparagus on the menu, while in the South of France I understand that green asparagus is preferred.

In Germany there is often an 'asparagus menu' round this time of the year; based on white asparagus. However when I met friends in Munich this week one friend expressed a contrarian preference for the green.

One of the best lots of aspargus I ever tasted was from a farm in Shropshire. I always am amused at the rapid side-effect it has on your pee!

O.
